Campfire circle

I recently finished this scratchboard illustration for the February 2009 issue of Sojourners magazine. My work is regularly featured in their "Living the Word" column. (Copyright 2008 by Julie Lonneman)

  1. Beautiful site, a testimony to the power of imagery to communicate not just an idea but also the feeling that flows from it. Julie carries on the tradition of Ida Bethune and Fritz Eichenberg, whose timeless works still grace the Catholic Worker newspaper.

Dorothy Day

Today I completed this portrait of Dorothy Day, drawing it with a Wacom tablet in Photoshop. It's very unusual for me to create something completely digital from start to finish. In general I prefer to work manually, but using the computer seemed the best way to deal with the complexity of this illustration. (Image copyright 2009 by Julie Lonneman)

Playing with colors and textures

Making something beautiful from repurposed materials: deconstructed old sweaters, leftover bits of yarn. This one is for my daughter. Planning to do more and contemplating getting a loom of my own.
James and Evelyn Whitehead received a notecard from a friend, and noticed my illustration on it. They thought the image would be perfect for the cover of their new book that was to be published by The Crossroad Publishing Company. I received my copy today.
